Jerome De Nijs Shares His Interning Experience |
|
Jerome de Nijs is an intern here at Dominion Enterprises. He is a rising Sophomore at Brown University, and is concentrating in Computer Science. We've asked Jerome to tell us a little bit about what he’s done here and his thoughts on his experience with Dominion. Here’s what he had to say: I’ve been working on research regarding Big Data Warehousing and Analytics. Today’s data is doubling in size every 15 to 18 months*, and with all the new streams of unstructured data like social media feeds and web site traffic that do not fit well into traditional database warehouses, big data solutions that are built for scalability, compression, and speed are necessary in order to organize and analyze these massive sets of data. These new systems are built with entirely new architectures, specifically massively parallel processing (MPP), shared nothing architecture, and column oriented storage, which allow us to organize and access our data much more quickly and efficiently than before. We can also gain greater insights because these new databases have the resources to analyze all the data quickly as opposed to just being able to look at samples of the data, which can be misleading. By leveraging big data we can find out what people are looking for and why they are looking for it so that, ultimately, we can make the consumer’s shopping experience as easy and as enjoyable as possible. Working at Dominion Enterprises has been a great experience and I’ve learned a great deal about the big data industry and data management in general. Thank you, Jerome ![]() |
